Fleas in the Home: Why Problems Often Appear at the End of Summer
A flea problem can appear to arrive suddenly.
You may notice pets scratching, small jumping insects near carpets or itchy marks around the ankles.
In reality, fleas may have been developing out of sight for several weeks. Warm conditions, occupied homes and returning to a property after time away can all make activity more apparent.
Understanding the flea life cycle
Only adult fleas live and feed on a host. Eggs can fall from a pet into carpets, bedding, upholstered furniture and gaps between floorboards. Larvae then develop in protected areas before forming pupae inside resistant cocoons. This environmental stage is why treating a cat or dog does not automatically clear the whole property.
Vibration, warmth and exhaled carbon dioxide can encourage adults to emerge from their cocoons. Activity may therefore seem to intensify when a family returns from holiday, new occupants move in, or a previously quiet room is used again.
Signs that deserve attention
Frequent scratching or over-grooming in a pet should be discussed with a veterinary professional. You may also see dark “flea dirt” in the coat, adult fleas moving through fur, or small insects jumping from carpets and soft furnishings. Human bites are commonly reported around ankles and lower legs, but bites alone are not enough for a firm identification.
Pets are common hosts, but a property can occasionally have fleas even when no pet currently lives there. Previous animals, visiting wildlife or an established environmental population may all be relevant. Correct identification prevents time and money being spent on the wrong treatment.
What householders can do
Speak to your vet about an appropriate product for every pet in the household and use it exactly as directed. Never use a treatment intended for one animal species on another. Wash pet bedding in accordance with its care label and vacuum carpets, edges, beneath furniture and other resting areas thoroughly. Dispose of the vacuum contents outside in a sealed bag.
Continue vacuuming as advised during treatment. Movement can stimulate new adults to emerge, allowing them to encounter the control measures. Do not apply pesticides to people or pets, and do not mix products.
